Both feature exceptional international tourism infrastructure, dense foreign-licensed boutique hotels, highly reliable mobile navigation, and gentle terrain without sudden extreme altitude leaps.

Yes. Major domestic car rental networks (Zuoche and eHi) support intercity and interprovincial one-way vehicle returns. For example, picking up in Chengdu and dropping off in Kunming, or picking up in Xining and dropping off in Dunhuang is common. Expect a one-way vehicle relocation surcharge (1,000–2,500 RMB) depending on distance.

Western Sichuan is more dramatic, remote, and mountainous, featuring passes above 4,200 meters, raw glaciated peaks (such as Mount Siguniang and Mount Gongga), and vast Tibetan grasslands. Yunnan has gentler road gradients, richer historical cultural nodes (Dali Bai architecture, Naxi music, ancient tea trading towns), and milder year-round weather.

Most major tourist corridors in Northern and Central Xinjiang (such as Kanas Lake, Sayram Lake, the Duku Highway, Turpan, and the Kuqa Canyon) are open to foreign independent drivers holding valid provisional permits. However, certain border frontier checkpoints near Kazakhstan, Pakistan, or military cantonments require special clearance. Avoid unmapped desert tracks.

By PRC public security law, hotels must be certified to register foreign passport holders. In regional county towns, always book accommodations marked as 'Foreign Guests Accepted' (接待外宾) on booking engines like Trip.com. If you arrive at an uncertified rural guesthouse, the host cannot legally lodge you.

Expressway toll rates in China typically range from 0.40 to 0.65 RMB per kilometer for passenger cars. For example, driving 300 km on an expressway costs approximately 120–180 RMB ($17–$25 USD). The sole exception is Hainan Island, where all expressways are completely toll-free (toll revenues are collected through a fuel excise surcharge).

Winter self-drive (November to March) in Western Sichuan and Northern Xinjiang is strictly for experienced alpine winter drivers equipped with AWD, studded snow tires or tire chains, and cold-weather survival gear. Mountain passes regularly drop to -25°C with severe black ice. For winter vacations, Southern Yunnan or Hainan are vastly superior.

China's 4G and 5G cellular coverage is astonishingly comprehensive. Even on remote plateau passes in Sichuan and desert corridors in Gansu, cellular towers line national highways. However, in deep mountain river canyons (such as Tiger Leaping Gorge or remote Altai valleys), download offline map packages in Amap before departing.

Yes. Vehicle ro-ro ferries connect Guangdong (Zhanjiang Xuwen Port) with Haikou on Hainan Island across the Qiongzhou Strait. However, during Chinese New Year and national holidays, ferry vehicle queues can exceed 10 hours. It is far more convenient to fly into Haikou or Sanya and collect a local rental car directly on the island.
